Kids room organization

I don't know about you but between toys and clothes in kids rooms it can become pretty crazy in there. Even to a point where you can't even see the floor!! Ugh we use to keep everything that was my son's in his room and it just became too much as he got older. Too much clothing, too many toys, too many school "art" projects aka coloring sheets, exc.

Now we have a few select toy groups in his room.

My main one is Legos he can keep all his Legos in his room, it has helped to keep the family room cleaner, but his whole room is now a building zone! Lol

This system of organizing his Legos has been so amazing! The material baskets hold the larger pieces and the bulk of the Legos. I have also added a few plastic drawers for special and small pieces so they are easier to find.

He currently has all the Nerf guns and bullets in here so they don't get lost amoungst the construction happening in the basement. But this one is only temporary.

The only other toys allowed in his room are ones that he considers "super special" and they have to fit in this tote. It also contains collections of things like rock collection, fidget spinners, hatchimals, some school art projects exc but it all has to fit in here.

I keep books in his closet that are age appropriate so he can come read whenever he wants, and we choose something to read before bed.

In his closet I also have this clothes oragnizer hanger.

I put an outfit in there for everyday. Right now there are just jeans aka school pants. I noticed when they were all in drawers he would just choose sweats to wear EVERY day. Since he does not go to school at Walmart I told him he needed to wear nice pants out of the house. We have since compromised that he can wear sweats on PE days once a week. Sometimes when we get up late he sneeks out in sweats and I don't notice until we are about in the car and it is too late to change! Little stinker, but we are getting better! This also helps to rotate out shirts or else he just wears the same 5 school shirts every week.

This is his shirt drawer that I rotate from and his play/sweat pants drawer. Both items I lay on their side so it is easier to see all of what is in the drawer. Here is how I hang his church clothes, I reuse the store clippy hangers then on one hanger my son can see the pants and shirt he is choosing. They also sell hangers similar to this.

I keep all of his shoes in the mud room with the idea that he will rotate through them, but in reality he has his 2 fav pairs and right now one of those are snow boots lol. But if you do keep shoes in a closet having short little shoe shelves would be helpful. One day I want to build me some for my closet.

On the top shelf of the closet it is pretty hard to access so I keep the play dough up there and I am the only one allowed to get it down. I found this perfect short tote to keep it all in!

To combat all the art brought home what I do now is take a pic of it with the child that did it and maybe siblings, hang it on the fridge or put out somewhere for a little while. Then one day it disappears into the trash while I am cleaning. A few things I hide, pictures that I think he is more attached to and see if he notices that they are gone before they forever leave the house. I do this to prevent epic melt downs and prevent me from pretending to look for said items that got lost, knowing full well that I tossed it. I like to take a pic with the child who made the art so we can see in the future what they looked like at the time, not just an art project that they won't remember doing in 5 years.

Sticker book, this is something that my son came up with because he didn't like me throwing away his stickers that were on his shirts after school. Any sticker he wants to keep he puts in his sticker book. This has also saved many shirts because he remembers to take the stickers off before his clothes go into the dirty clothes and then sneek into the washing machine without me knowing, ruining a shirt. There have been a hand full of stickers that will never come off after being washed. You know me, I hate throwing good things away so I try everything I can before throwing in the towel. This system has made both of us happy over the last few years, even though it just feels like keeping trash around.

Rotating clothes, about 1x per year I rotate out bigger kids clothes, even though sizes vary. As in my oldest is in size 6 clothes, some pants are highwaters (is that still a clothing description?) on him while others are just right, same with shirts. I change them all out at once so I don't have to keep going through things over and over again throughout the year. I pack away all clothing that says size 6 (it will be passed down to my next son any ways) into a labeled tote and toss anything too worn. Then I pull out my 7yr old tote full of clothes that I have been collecting over the last year. I buy things out of season and on sale from name brand stores and from thrift stores as I find clothes in great condition, it is really hard to find good used clothing for boys over 3 that is why I start searching 1 year before. Then by the time he is in the next size up I have enough to replace all that I have put away.

I like having his dirty clothes hamper in his closet, then it isn't taking up the main floor space and he has more room to play.

This super long shelf from the 80's that I painted has been awesome for displaying Legos and the hooks are amazing for all his hanging collections. I was going to cut out the hearts to make it more boyish. But he loved the hearts and begged me not to, so they stayed.

There are so many different ways to organize a child's room, just have fun and be creative!! Maybe even ask your child about problem areas and see if they have any ideas as to what might work. My son is always surprising me with his ideas.

Here is the before and after.

This is a really hard angle to get a pic of the whole room, so I just kinda meshed it! Lol

It feels good to have everything freshly organized in here! I hope as you clean and organize any space you feel a load lifted off your mind as you make the area work for your needs.
