Last year I had a few kohlrabi plants that were too small and not worth picking so I decided to leave them because I had read that most kohlrabi were heirlooms (which means the seeds the plant produces will grow true to what it was) and that it takes 2 years to get seeds. So I thought why not I will wait and see if we get seeds next year. Sure enough our kohlrabi made these pretty yellow flowers and the big strings of seed pods came next.
It was so fun to see and harvest our first seeds! We also let Some onions do the same thing they were ready much later then the kohlrabi though. I knew they were ready to be harvested because the pods we're starting to dry out if I had let them dry all the way outside then they would have broken open on their own dumping all their seeds right there. I didn't want a giant patch of kohlrabi right there, ha. We got so many seeds I really wasn't sure what to expect but it sure wasn't that 1 plant can produce at least 5 years worth of seeds for a big family, based on what we got. It was so fun to learn a new step to gardening. One day maybe we will be at the point where we are collecting all of our own seeds to plant the next year, not needing to buy any. I am definitely not there yet haha! Here is how my harvesting went.
